The Bible: Nevi'im Rishonim , Nevi'im Achronim, Ketuvim
The content of each section should be delineated. The students should create a time line that includes all the periods involved.
Nevi'im Acharonim - Chronological Order:
The students should be aware that Yeshayahu preceeds Yirmiyahu. Trei-Asar covers a large span of time, but since these are short prophecies, they were collected in one volume.
The Authority of Nevi'im and Ketuvim
The teacher should discuss the difference between Nevi'im and Ketuvim, and the difference between Nevuah (prophecy) and Ruach Hakodesh (Divine inspiration).
See הקדמה לספר יהושע for the text of the Abarbanel on the subject of the three qualifications that are needed for a prophecy to be included in the Nevi'im.
The teacher should emphasize that the root of Nevi'im is ניב (speech). These words were meant to be said orally, and only later were written down. Ketuvim, on the other hand, were intended to be transmitted in writing.
Yirmiyahu - His Times:
The students should fill in a chart listing the last five kings of Yehudah and the important events of their times, to refresh their knowledge of this time period. Appendix also contains another chart that will put the events of the end of Melachim II in sequential order.
The Role of the Prophet
The parameters of the prophet are delineated in Devarim 18:18-22.
The teacher may opt to teach this section in the context of chapter 1, verse 5.
See Appendix for a preparatory assignment on the background of the book of Yirmiyahu, a test, and a worksheet on the subject of prophecy in general.
