Verse 1:

הדבר אשר היה אל ירמיהו מאת ה' אחר שלח אותו נבוזראדן רב טבחים מן הרמה בקחתו אותו והוא אסור באזיקים בתוך כל גלות ירושלים ויהודה המוגלים בבלה

הדבר אשר היה אל ירמיהו מאת ה'

1. Yirmiyahu's prophecy concerning the Jews' wish to go down to Egypt is brought at the beginning of chapter 42. Chapters 40 and 41 contain the background of this prophecy, and the reason why the Jews wanted to flee to Egypt. The beginning of chapter 40 explains how it came about that Yirmiyahu was still in the land of Israel, and had not gone with the rest of the exiles to Babylon. (Metzudat David)

2. Hashem told Yirmiyahu to remain in the land of Israel, and not to go to Babylon. (Radak)

בקחתו אתו והוא אסור באזיקים בתוך כל גלות ירושלים

1. When Yirmiyahu was freed, he sat among the people, and so, he was rounded up with them as they were put in chains for the trip to Babylon. (Metzudat David)

2.* Yirmiyahu chose to be among those sent into exile, and wound their chains around him. He wanted to empathize with their pain. (Malbim)

Verse 2:

ויקח רב טבחים לירמיהו ויאמר אליו ה' אלוקיך דיבר את הרעה הזאת אל המקום הזה

ה' אלוקיך דיבר את הרעה הזאת

Nebuzaradan asked why Yirmiyahu was feeling anguish for the people, since the people had not heeded his voice. (Rashi)

Verse 3:

ויבא ויעש ה' כאשר דיבר כי חטאתם לה' ולא שמעתם בקולו והיה לכם הדבר הזה

ויבא ויעש ה'

Nebuzaradan recognized that the victory was due to Hashem, and not to Nebuchadnezzar's power. (Metzudat David)

ולא שמעתם בקולו

The people did not listen to the words of Hashem, telling them to surrender to Babylon, and to be subservient to Nebuchadnezzar. (Metzudat David)

The Midrash states that when Yirmiyahu left the people, they began weeping because he was deserting them. Yirmiyahu retorted that had they cried but once before the destruction, it would not have happened. (Yalkut Shimoni 327)

Verse 4:

ועתה הנה פיתחתיך היום מן האזיקים אשר על ידיך אם טוב בעיניך לבוא אתי בבל בוא ואשים את עיני עליך ואם רע בעיניך לבוא אתי בבל חדל ראה כל הארץ לפניך אל טוב ואל הישר בעיניך ללכת שמה לך

ועתה הנה פיתחתיך היום מן האזיקים אשר על ידיך

Since Yirmiyahu warned the people that they should surrender, he is blameless. Therefore, he was released from the chains. (Metzudat David)

Verse 5:

ועודנו לא ישוב ושובה אל גדליה בן אחיקם בן שפן אשר הפקיד מלך בבל בערי יהודה ושב אתו בתוך העם או אל כל הישר בעיניך ללכת לך ויתן לו רב טבחים ארוחה ומשאת וישלחהו

The students should try and understand the difficulty in the first part of the verse before seeing the commentaries. They should note the difference between Rashi and Metzudat David regarding the words ושובה אל גדליה.

1. Yirmiyahu was hesitant to stay in the land of Israel, until Hashem told him to stay with Gedaliah. Hashem taught Yirmiyahu that the poor people who had remained needed direction from him, just as much as the people who had gone into exile. (Rashi)

2. Yirmiyahu was silent in response to the suggestion of Nebuzaradan. Nebuzaradan understood from his silence that Yirmiyahu wanted to remain, and therefore told him to do so. (Metzudat David)

ויתן לו רב הטבחים ארוחה ומשאת

He gave him two types of presents. (Radak)

Verse 7:

וישמעו כל שרי החיילים אשר בשדה המה ואנשיהם כי הפקיד מלך בבל את גדליהו בן אחיקם בארץ וכי הפקיד אתו אנשים ונשים וטף ומדלת הארץ מאשר לא הגלו בבלה

כל שרי החיילים אשר בשדה המה ואנשיהם

These people were in the field, where they had hidden from the Babylonian forces during the war. (Metzudat David)

וכי הפקיד אתו אנשים ונשים

1. These people realized that Nebuchadnezzar wasn't exiling people any more, but, rather, wanted the land to be resettled. (Malbim)

2. Gedaliah was appointed officer of the people. (Metzudat David)

Verse 9:

וישבע להם גדליהו בן אחיקם בן שפן ולאנשיהם לאמור אל תיראו מעבוד הכשדים שבו בארץ ועבדו את מלך בבל וייטב לכם

ועבדו את מלך בבל וייטב לכם

The people should not be afraid of serving Nebuchadnezzar because he will not increase their burden. (Metzudat David)

Verse 10:

ואני הנני יושב במצפה לעמוד לפני הכשדים אשר יבואו אלינו ואתם איספו יין וקיץ ושמן ושימו בכליכם ושבו בעריכם אשר תפשתם

לעמוד לפני הכשדים

Gedaliah was willing to stand and protect the people. (Metzudat David)

ואתם איספו יין וקיץ ושמן ושימו בכליכם

They are to gather their produce in public, without fear of robbery. (Malbim)

The midrash Petichta d'Eichah Rabbah section 34 offers the conversation that took place between Yirmiyahu and Nebuzaradan upon his seeing Yirmiyahu in chains. The students should note in this midrash the tremendous mesirut nefesh - devotion - and love for the people expressed by Yirmiyahu here. So much so, that Nebuzaradan couldn't understand it.

Verse 11:

וגם כל היהודים אשר במואב ובבני עמון ובאדום ואשר בכל הארצות שמעו כי נתן מלך בבל שארית ליהודה וכי הפקיד עליהם את גדליהו בן אחיקם בן שפן

וגם כל היהודים אשר במואב

The Jews that had fled to Moab during the war. (Metzudat David)

Verse 13:

ויוחנן בן קרח וכל שרי החיילים אשר בשדה באו אל גדליהו המצפתה

אשר בשדה

They had had to flee to the countryside during the war. (Metzudat David)

Verse 15:

ויוחנן בן קרח אמר אל גדליהו בסתר במצפה לאמור אלכה נא ואכה את ישמעאל בן נתניה ואיש לא ידע למה יככה נפש ונפוצו כל יהודה הנקבצים אליך ואבדה שארית יהודה

אלכה נא ואכה

1. Yochanan wanted to kill Yishmael before Yishmael would have a chance to kill Gedaliah. (Metzudat David)

2. Yochanan offered to kill Yishmael quietly, so that no one would suspect Gedaliah of killing innocent people. (Malbim)
