Rug
Doctor
Contributing greatly to my demise as a psychologist
was the abstract nature of the work itself. It was a real killer - chaotic,
and, seemingly, measured with a rubber ruler.
One thing that brought this home to me was in my
occasional work as a Rug Doctor. Every so often, we would rent a Rug Doctor
machine and steam clean our carpets. I found this to be such a refreshing
change of pace from doing counseling and therapy that I almost considered
changing fields. It was really therapeutic.
I think I enjoyed seeing results. The water in the
machine would, actually, turn black from the dirt, right before my eyes, and
you could watch the dirty water as it was being sent down the drain. For others
in our profession, gardening would satisfy many of the same needs.
Lately I haven't had the urge to clean my carpets
with a Rug Doctor. I'm either moving up the spiritual ladder
and am a great deal more satisfied, or I might just be getting lazy.
It's probably some combination of the two!
